March 28 – Palm Sunday
MV 128 – When They Heard That Jesus Was Coming. Author and composer Rory Cooney is director of liturgy and music at St. Anne Catholic Community in Barrington, Illinois. Here he uses language from early church antiphons for a Palm Sunday processional.
VU 611 – Out of the Depths, O God, We Call to You. This text by Ruth Duck was commissioned by the Anna Howard Shaw Centre of Boston University in 1988 for a conference on “Women and the Word.” It was subsequently included in Ruth Duck’s collection “Dancing in the Universe” (1992). The tune, OUT OF THE DEPTHS, is by United Church minister Jeeva Sam, who currently serves on the Niagara peninsula.
MV 99 – Stand, O Stand Firm. This is a traditional song from Cameroon, calling us to be steadfast in our faith.
VU 126 – Ride On, Ride On, the Time is Right. Our final hymn moves us from the celebration of Palm Sunday into the challenges of Holy Week. Text and tune are by John Bell, from “Enemy of Apathy” (1988), the second volume of Wild Goose Songs, published by the Iona Community.
