Judy Rebick at TSP on January 31st

By Hans van Nie - Posted on 06 January 2010

Judy Rebick is a well-known social justice activist, writer, educator and speaker. She currently holds the Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy at Ryerson University.

Judy is founder of rabble.ca, Canada’s most popular independent online news and discussion site and the author of several books and articles, most recently Transforming Power: From the Personal to the Political (Penguin 2009),  Her other books are Ten Thousand Roses: The Making of a Feminist Revolution (Penguin 2005),  Imagine Democracy (Stoddard 2000) and Politically Speaking (Douglas & McIntyre 1996)

Judy is perhaps best known to Canadians as a former president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, Canada’s largest women’s group. During the 1990’s, Judy was the host of a two national TV show on CBC Newsworld and a frequent commentator on CBC radio and television. She also contributes commentaries to a host of newspapers and magazines.

The theme of the January 31st service (10:30 a.m.) will be "transforming power: learning from indigenous leadership of Bolivia and other sites of hope."  Ms. Rebick has been invited to speak because she has been very involved in solidarity with indigenous peoples' struggles for full participation and equity in their societies, from Gaza and the West Bank to Ontario and Bolivia.  In this season of Epiphany we strive to live into our vocation of transforming power structures and living in solidarity with those who struggle for equity, dignity, and the abundant life God desires for us.

A light lunch and hour-long dialogue with Judy will follow the service, from
12:15 until 1:30. Copies of her new book Transforming Power: From the Personal to the Political will be available to purchase.
