Prayers of the People - January 30, 2011
We meet in the presence of God who, together with us knows our needs, hears our cries, feels our pain, and heals our wounds. Let us pray.
O God our source of love and grace, we are gathered now as your people. Sheltered here briefly from the busy-ness of our daily lives; we wait in silence. In that quiet space O God, help us open our hearts to our innermost longings, to reach a deep awareness of our blessings and our needs. May we hear your voice in our hearts guiding our prayers; for we know that the prayers we say give form to the lives we lead, just as the lives we live give rise to the prayers we say.
GOD of love, turn our hearts to your ways; and give us peace. Sung Response.
Sung Response: Yarabba Ssalami
Yarabba ssalami amter alayna ssalam
Yarabba ssalanmi inla’ qulubana ssalam.
You, God of peace, send down your peace on our world.
You, God of peace, fill our hearts with your peace.
O God, our refuge and strength, we hold up the conflict and pain in the Holy Land, and other countries fraught with violence and war. We ask that you bring near the day when violent conflict shall cease and hatred and greed shall end, that your peace may reign over us all.
Almighty and merciful God, we pray for refugees, such as those from Palestine, and all those who today are fleeing from danger, homeless and hungry, that they may feel your grace in some small way. Bless those who work to bring them relief.
We pray that you inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts, that the gifts of your spirit, faith, hope and love, will shine through us so that we may be instruments of your peace in our Church, in our communities and in our homes.
GOD of love, turn our hearts to your ways; and give us peace. Sung response.
O reconciling Spirit we open our hearts to your abiding wisdom and we ask you to help us hold justice, love and humility together as we seek peaceful outcomes in this world. We know that we cannot bring peace to others unless we first are filled with the peace that comes from you.
O timeless God for whom we have no time, we confess that too often in the fast-paced lives we lead our words hurt others and our deeds are selfish; forgive us we pray and help us show love to all and to do good to those would do us ill, in the name of Jesus. May we work toward right relationship in all our affairs. Help us to discern your wisdom as we respond to the conflicts in our lives and communities, so that we may act with hope and allow your grace to shine through us and to touch those with whom we work and live or support from afar.
GOD of love, turn our hearts to your ways; and give us peace. Refrain.
Gracious Spirit, source of love, you are our refuge, our rock and our fortress. We lift up our hearts in gratitude for the abundance of your love for us, for your forgiveness of our shortcomings, and for prayers you have answered.
Healer of our every ill, we remember the sick and hospitalized, lonely or depressed, the bereaved and the dying, we pray that you extend your comfort to those who mourn, especially to those closest to us, whom we name aloud or silently at this time...…
Particularly we remember David MacDonald, Anne Stinson, Marg Porteous, Colin Phillips and family mourning the loss of his grandfather Gordon Barrett.
And we pray for Elizabeth and Dave Morley, and their family, upon the passing of Elizabeth’s mother Joyce Wood, and pray that the celebration of her life on Monday be uplifting.
GOD of love, turn our hearts to your ways; and give us peace. Refrain.
Ecumenical Prayer
We pray with the church in Ireland, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales:
Let us work together as contrasting colours,
join together across divides of difference,
bind together with loving connections,
unite together combining our strengths,
knit together in patterns of worship,
pull together demolishing our barriers,
mould together retaining our personhood,
cement together softening our bitterness and
design together to be communities of peace.
