“When we gather in community, we become midwives of one another’s dreams and guardians of one another’s dignity.” – Mercy Amba Oduyoye
On September 1, 2025, The Rev. Hewitt T. Holmes joins the team at Trinity-St. Paul’s as congregational minister, scholar, and companion on the journey of faith. Born and raised in Jamaica, his calling to ministry has taken him from teaching, chaplaincy, and congregational life in Jamaica to serving congregations in Dryden, Thunder Bay, and Barrie, Ontario. Alongside nearly two decades of congregational leadership, ordained in 2006 by the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and admitted to the United Church of Canada in 2015, Hewitt also serves the wider church through leadership at the regional and general council levels, including the Board of Vocation, the way forward, programs for ministry and mission, and personnel committees.
As both a minister and a PhD student at the Vancouver School of Theology and Durham University, Hewitt’s research engages migration, missio Dei, and intercultural theology through the lens of Black Caribbean Canadian experiences. His academic work is deepened by his pastoral practice, embodying a theology that is lived, liberative, and attentive to the stories of God’s people.
Ministry for Hewitt is rooted in life-giving worship, compassionate pastoral care, and justice-seeking action, guided by the belief that the church is called to be a living sanctuary of hope, courage, and transformation. He values collaboration with staff, lay leaders, and the broader community, seeing the Spirit at work in the weaving together of diverse gifts and voices.
Outside of ministry and scholarship, Hewitt enjoys sports, especially tennis and soccer, walking, cooking, canoeing, dominoes, and quiet time for reflection and prayer. These practices ground and energize his vocation, nurturing a rhythm of rest and play that sustains a healthy life and faithful companion in ministry. With gratitude and imagination, Hewitt walks alongside TSP and the city of Toronto, shaping a more beloved world.
