Tafelmusik - Bach’s Library
Tafelmusik - Bach’s Library
March 3, 2023 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Tickets and info: https://my.tafelmusik.org/1219/1237
Peek into the library of J.S. Bach, featuring an elegant suite, virtuoso harpsichord concertos, and music by those who inspired him.
Making his Tafelmusik debut this season is harpsichord soloist and director Francesco Corti, “a powerhouse of unbridled vivacity, exciting and excitable in equal measure” (BBC Music Magazine). Corti leads the orchestra in a fascinating program of music by J. S. Bach and those who inspired him, including Steffani and Zelenka—composers whose manuscripts were found to be part of his personal library.
At the heart of this concert are three works by Bach himself: the elegant Orchestral Suite no 1 in C Major, featuring Tafelmusik’s superb wind players, the imposing and exhilarating Harpsichord Concerto in D Minor, and the brilliant Harpsichord Concerto in D Major.

Turbulent, intense, and tender, a Passion for our times.
When first performed, Bach’s St John Passion shocked the Church fathers in Leipzig with its intensity and fervour. It is just that intensity that makes it so relevant in today’s highly charged and turbulent times.
Our special performances of Bach’s masterpiece include projections of images, curated by director Ivars Taurins, from the illuminated Saint John’s Bible, a contemporary work of art that unites ancient Benedictine traditions with the vision of today. This striking visual element will explore a universal spiritual message while offering a deeper understanding of the context around St John Passion.
Harrowing, passionate, and tender by turn, the St John Passion reflects our world as well as Bach’s. It refuses to shy away from the darkness inherent in the tale, which makes the final transformation of pain and grief into faith and love all the more powerful. One of the masterpieces of Western art.

The Toronto Consort - Canticum Canticorum
The Toronto Consort - Canticum Canticorum
March 10, 2023 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Tickets: Canticum Canticorum | The Toronto Consort
The most poetic book of the Bible, Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) is in fact a dialogue between two lovers. Acclaimed Swiss ensemble Canticum Trombonorum presents the journey of these famed lovers, through motets set by late-Renaissance and early-baroque Italian composers, instrumental interludes, and exploring the different possible combinations of two trombones, organ, theorbo, and a high voice.
Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre | 427 Bloor St West, Toronto, ON
Please note: There is no pre-concert lecture for this concert.
Health & Safety: We strongly encourage all guests to wear masks in consideration of others sharing the space. However, masks are not strictly required, and we cannot guarantee a fully-masked environment.
About Canticum Trombonorum
From the hypothesis that there might have been trombonists in the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries who enjoyed playing duets together, the question is raised: what music might they have played? One obvious possible answer is, simply, whatever music they could get their hands on that fit their taste and abilities. This is of course pure conjecture, but it is in that spirit that canticum trombonorum shamelessly borrows vocal and instrumental repertoire and uses it as a vehicle to explore the vocal qualities and expressive power of baroque trombones and the rich interplay that emerges when used as a pair or with few voices in intimate and virtuosic settings, outside of the bombast of large scale works or the instrumental prowess of chamber music with cornetts or violins, where trombones are more commonly heard. Founded in 2019 and based in Basel, Switzerland, the group comprises at its core the trombonists Maximilien Brisson and Tin Cugelj, who developed a strong friendship and musical partnership during their studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The group’s programmes see them joining forces with some of today’s best singers and continuo players.
