Pay Rent Sunday

June is Indigenous Peoples’ Month in the United Church of Canada, and this Sunday June 28 is our annual Pay Rent service where we pray and commit ourselves to act for true reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples on Indigenous Lands! “Rent” collection is a symbolic recognition of the unjust dispossession of Indigenous peoples from their land, and a MATERIAL reflection of our desire for a more equitable sharing with First Nations in the future. All offerings this Sunday will be donated to local Indigenous organizations in service of their work. We will be using special PAY RENT envelopes this Sunday for cash offerings, which will be enclosed in your bulletins.
We are joined by Sandra Campbell, Indigenous outreach coordinator and pastoral care worker at Toronto Urban Native Ministry (TUNM), and the Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, Assistant Professor at Emmanuel College, 44th Moderator of the United Church of Canada and our church’s first female Indigenous Moderator.
The service will begin outside in the Heart Garden at the corner of Bloor and Major Streets, and then move into the Sanctuary. Please join us on Sunday for this very special service organized by the Indigenous Rights Solidarity Group of TSP and Bathurst Street United Church. Stay afterwards for bannock and coffee in the garden — all are welcome.
